Hi

No they didn't state that he was her husband, they only gave me the date of death. Will check with them again tomorrow.yes that's the correct death record.

Think I'm going to have to buy the marriage cert to dig a bit deeper.

I notice both marriages were at Bethnal Green. There is some discussion that marriages were cheaper in this area or that irregular marriages were over looked. Lots of couples living at the same address when married to save money. Less questions asked if you were poor, had no family, were living in sin, were underage.

If she did marry her deceased husbands brother in 1955 it would have been legal.

The two surname thing on the marriage to Walter Mills - can occur where someone is known by two names, or if they are divorced, the record shows maiden and first married surname (certainly the case for my grandmother's second marriage)

electoral registers have a Susan and Harry Mills together in 156 Columbia Square bethnal green  (along with a Charles Mills) during 1945 and 46. After that, she's at the same address alone until 1954

Walter John dies age 63 at start of 1966, so born 1902 or early 1903, so this?

Births September quarter 1902
Walter John Mills     Mile End    1c   470      (Mills/Elgar on GRO)

but cannot see in 1939.

Added:
There is a Harry Mills/Elgar born in March quarter 1900 in Mile End.

freebdm

Marriages Dec 1886
Mills    William Henry        Bethnal Green    1c   654
Elgar    Harriet        Bethnal Green    1c   654

Can't see the 1911 census but freebdm offers this up, #doesnot seem correct though to many years out?
