I assumed this was the Mills family in 1891 census:
William H Mills   26  St George in the East
Harriett Mills   22  Ipswich Suffolk
William H Mills   3  St George in the East

These daughters also from GRO:
Elizabeth Emily 1897
Amelia Jane Mills September quarter 1894
Harriet Mills June quarter 1890
Ellen Georgina Mills December quarter 1909

So Harriet Elgar was married at 17 years old in 1886 to William Henry Mills and had a daughter in the 23rd year of her marriage aged 40 in 1909. So it does work. I wonder if there are earlier children too? Or perhaps Elizabeth Emily Mills was the first born when mum turned 21.

Wonder if you could put something in the paper at Southend on sea and just ask if anyone knew this family?

Thank you so much for all your help. The record has come through and this is my Susannah! I am now already in touch with her great granddaughter.  It turns out she had a child out of wedlock, Rita and took her to Pontypridd to be brought up by her sister Sarah Ann Purnell.  I need to explore the possibility of other children, she married Walter in 1955 and Harry in 1943 Bethnal Green.

Thanks again for all your help, you guys are amazing!!

Hi there
I'm also researching this family as it is my son in law to be' s family.
I have the marriage certificate of Thomas Henry Griffiths in 1921 Robert Henry's son ,  so brother  to Susannah and Rachel and Robert Henry is down as Deceased by the date of the marriage Coal MIner.
I haven't found his death for definite but I have found one in 1916 which certainly looks possible as he was alive in 1911 Census .

Hi Ann,

Yes I have Robert Henry's death certificate, he died in Llwynypia hospital in 1933. I know its him because the death was registered by D J Purnell who was Sarah Ann's husband. we went to visit his grave in Pontypridd, he is buried with Margaret and Sarah Ann's granddaughter. I take it your son-in-law is related to Thomas Henry? Rachel always said that Robert was a heavy drinker and the family basically split when Margaret died, maybe that's why Thomas has listed him as deceased? I have found this side of my family so difficult to trace! I cannot find a birth for Robert so am currently at a stand still.
Thanks

Debbie

That's great at least I know his death date now !
I know his father was also called Robert as I've seen a copy of his marriage certificate but I cant find him in the census or births. Maybe he was born somewhere else not in Wales ???
