The Harewood Arms" Oxford, North Canterbury
« on: Tuesday 06 June 17 23:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am seeking any information or a photo about  "The Harewood Arms" hotel, in East Oxford, North Canterbury. Acquired by Frederick Luers in 1864. There were four hotels in Oxford, only one, "The Commercial" built by William Paget, in 1878, still operates today.

Was the hotel located in High Street? If not, then where exactly?

I have checked through PapersPast, but all reports refer to East Oxford. Any help would be appreciated, and a photo would be 'icing on the cake'. Thank you.

Sorry Printer, can't really help, but just adding this snippet to show the hotel was still being granted a licence (to R. O'BRIEN), as late as June 1929.

Wonder if Christchurch Library can help you at all ?

I have no idea what this article is about, but might be worth going to your local library to follow it up?

Hi Lucy2 & maddys52,

Thank you for your postings, I didn't think this was going to be easy. All the history in the area and Oxford itself, there is so very little available online, apart from PapersPast.. Which is a pity. The Oxford Museum holds much history, and family photos, but that too is only open at the weekend, 2 hours each day. Certainly doesn't help those only able to visit during the week! Regards.

Hello Printer,
I have visited the Oxford Museum while holidaying from Australia, and found the volunteers very helpful. You could contact them through their website oxfordmuseum.weebly.com.
Also, the local monthly Oxford Observer Community Newsletter is online www.oxfordobserver.co.nz
Local newspapers and libraries all over the world have helped me with my research.
Happy hunting,
Valsgirl

Hello Valsgirl,

Thank you for those details, I will give them a go.

I have now discovered too where "The Harewood Arms" hotel stood - cnr of High & Weld Sts, eastside toward Main St.

Hi Printer,
Did you learn anything more about The Harewood Arms?

I see it's on Street View opposite the current Anglican Church. Presently a residence. The owner back in the day was Thomas Woodfield and I've taken a bit of an interest in him. Busy man.

Please let me know if you found that photo!

Hello Rickvillian,

Yes, I did manage to learn a lot more about "The Harewood Arms", and also gained some wonderful old photos, courtesy of the Oxford Museum, North Canterbury. I am familiar with the Anglican church, and now know exactly where the old hotel stood. I will check the current Street view. Thank you.

Nice one.

Thomas Woodfield was quite an involved man. Farmer, general store owner, timber mill plant owner, hotelier, schoolmaster. I'm trying to learn more as he may have been in the same church as my ancestor.
