Extract from the Will of Thomas Haull
« on: Wednesday 07 June 17 00:12 BST (UK) »
Can someone help me with this extract from the last page of the 1623 Will of Thomas Haul [Hall]?

I can read most of the Will but I'm having a problem with the name in the middle of this piece (written in bold). It looks like Micaia but I've not come across that name before. Thomas names his son Matthew Hall as his executor and I wondered if Micaia could be a variation of Matthew.

Any ideas welcomed.

Thanks

Matt

It looks like Micaia to me as well. Are the 2 words after it "my sonne"? "And unto Micaia my sonne I give my house & land...".
Could it have been Michael?
There were characters in the Bible called Micah/ Micaiah, including Micah, a prophet (Book of Micah) and Micaiah, another prophet, son of Imlah, and Micah, great-grandson of King Saul. (King Saul also had a daughter, Michel, who married David.)

Hiya

That's probably the quickest reply I've had to a post lol! Yes it does sound like Michah although I don't know how that relates to Michael. As I say I can read most of the rest of the Will but there are a few words here that threw me.

I have copies of both the original will and the registered copy, and ironically in the original version I can again read virtually all of it except the part containing this name.

I will keep Michael/Michah in mind though.

Many thanks

Matt

There's no reason not to read it exactly as it is written.

He has two sons.  One is Micaia, a variant spelling on a Biblical name.

The other is Mathew.

Micaia isn't Mathew and he isn't meant to be Michael.

ADDED:  I should have said ...at least two sons...

Hi

Thanks for that info. Does this mean he had sons named Micaia and another named Matthew? Or do you simply mean he had another son? If he did have a son named Matthew it would be very useful to know.

Micah and Michael are from the same root. Both names mean "who is like God".
It was yourself who mentioned in your original post that Matthew Hall was a son of Thomas and was named executor of the will.
