Charles and William Edwards - born in France
« on: Wednesday 07 June 17 16:47 BST (UK) »
William Edwards b1821 Isle of Wight and wife Harriet Early b1817 - had 4 children - their 2 sons Charles b 1845 and William b 1848 were born in France.
No indication of where or why.
Given the family then returned to Southampton that there was some military/naval connection.
The 1841 census has newly married William and Harriet living in Southampton and he is a labourer.
Any clues please!
Thanks
Beeson from Buckinghamshire
Freer from Leicestershire

Green from Birmingham
Gurney from Leicestershire
Heffer from Surrey
Randall from Sussex
Robinson from Hinckley
Wadey from Sussex

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Revolution_of_1848

Thousands of British workers returned from France to England in 1848, some destitute having fled violence. There is quite a lot of information in the newspapers of the time but seldom about individuals - money was raised, some were sponsored to immigration to places such as Australia, etc.

William Sr is listed as an engineer in 1851, perhaps he was linked to the railways in France (there was a great deal of British involvement), perhaps he worked at a mill or other factory as a "stationary engineer" looking after their steam engines.

Unfortunately without knowing where exactly they were living it may be difficult to trace the births of the children in French records.
