Marriage of Lawrence Fairclough and Rebecca
« on: Wednesday 07 June 17 16:48 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the marriage of Lawrence Fairclough (b. 1802, Lancashire) and Rebecca (b. abt 1808, St. James, Middlesex).

They appear on the 1851 census in Lancashire from 1851 through to 1881. Lawrence was an army pensioner at Royal Hospital Chelsea. They may have married in London but cannot find a marriage.

I don't think they had any biological children, but adopted a girl sometime before 1861. Considering I cannot find them before 1851, they probably married in their 40s.

Thank you for the replies

I saw that marriage while looking, although why, if this is Lawrence, was his name listed as Frederick? His baptism record shows his as being named after his father Lawrence.

Yes, he was in the Life Guards in London. I see that he would have been living in London during that period, so the marriage seems plausible, except for the name.

Is there any way of finding parents' names from the marriage?

Unfortunately not unless they were named as witnesses (which it would appear they were not).

Buy what?  The marriage was pre 1837, so before Civil Registration, so no marriage cert.
Only the Parish register, details of which have been given.

Doesn't the 1841 I gave add a lot of evidence that we are on the right track? ie ages with him a good few years older than her (remember ages are rounded on 1841 so not exact), plus him being born out of county and her in, plus him being an "Officer....."

Hmm, a quick glance at censuses suggests there were more than one Lawrence Fairclough born around 1802ish in Lancashire.
