Patrick TUNNEY, born 1834, Mayo, Ireland
« on: Wednesday 07 June 17 17:37 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Patrick TUNNEY was the son of James (a Gardener) and Mary TUNNEY and in 1851 was living in Stafford Street, Wolverhampton.   He received a 10 year transportation sentence for robbery on 11/03/1851 which was subsequently commuted and he was granted an early release licence on 08/05/1855.   One primary source shows his name as TURNEY but this appears poor transcription.

I have failed to retrieve any further information after 1855, except for the possibility he may have married and moved to Duddingston, Midlothian, according to the 1891 Scotland Census.   Can anyone help with details after 1855 please ???

For the moment,

BAC3

Don't know if this is the same person but a family tree has

Patrick Tunney born 1835 Ireland
Marriage 1863 Newcastle to Mary McGrail
Children born in Ohio
Death in Kentucky 1917

No parents are shown for Patrick but might be worth checking out  :)

The 1880 US census confirms both parents born Ireland and he is a labourer.

Did your Patrick have brothers and sisters?  There are mentions of Bridget and John or Michael.

If yours didn't then can rule out the chap in America  :)

Thank you Milliepede,

I had not realised "TUNNEY" was such a popular name!!

You mention the 1863 marriage in Newcastle.   Was that Northumberland or Staffordshire?   And a quick check through FamilySearch did not throw up an 1880 USA Census reference nor the 1851 England Census for the parents.   Another brickwall...... ::)

For now,

I found the records on ancestry plus a family tree had a link to the 1880 census.

There was a copy of the marriage sheet and it was Roman Catholic and said he was of North Shields.

Marriage registration here Newcastle T (Northumberland)

The 1851 census is no help with parents as he is a prisoner age 17.

Do you have him in 1841 with parents to know their names or is that from a baptism?

I would check any other baptisms for same parents.

The death certificate for the Patrick Tunney in Kentucky names his parents as Michael Tunney & Mary Ward.

Have you checked out the 1856 marriage in Dudley to either Bridget Flynn or Ellen Martin?

Given the address of Stafford Street, Wolverhampton, I wonder if there is a connection to the John Tunney & wife Catherine (nee O'Malley) living there in 1861 & 1871.

RG9/1991/97/19
RG10/2936/101/26

By 1881 Catherine is a widow.
