Thanks AVM, yes, I had found that.

I suspect but haven't confirmed it anywwhere but believe that George Ox, William George Fox's father, died 1859/1860

Keith

Are you sure it is as late as that?  Jane (Dec qtr 1850) is the last Fox/Fenton birth registration, and although Elizabeth's marital status in 1851 isn't entirely clear it seems to me it may well be "Wid".

Possible death for George on that basis: Dec qtr 1850 Dorchester, aged 52.

Corresponding burial:

George Fox aged 54 [sic], of Middle-march, Minterne Magna, buried there on 28 Sep 1850.

Hi avm

Yes, I too have seen the poss George Fox death in 4q 1850. However, I have the Marriage Cert for William G Fox and Jane Buckhurst in 1882 when William G in Bethnal Green said he was 23 years old. He said at that time that his father was George Fox? I agree that whilst 1861 Census states Elizabeth as a Widow, its not clear in the 1851 Census.

Also, where are George Fox and Elizabeth Fenton in 1841, having married in 1841?

Keith

Agree the status for Elizabeth is unclear in 1851.  If I had to guess I would say Married and the single letters on the page are W for widow but most unclear  :-\

Does George the husband appear anywhere other than his marriage - are there any children that should be around in 1841 (marriage 1838 gives scope for one or two to have been born)

There is an Eliza Fox 25 on her own in Sherbourne Dorset 1841 Not from County but is that her.

Hi again,

So, regarding which records does George Fox appear on:

George and Elizabeth seem to have had 4 children:
1   Hamilton Fox      1842, Yeovil, Dorset (died 13 June 1857 in Melcombe-Horsey)
2   Charlotte Fox      1845, Middlemarsh, Dorset
3   Jane Fox*      12th September 1850, Minterne Magna, Dorset
4   William G Fox      1859, Minterne, Dorset

You all have helped me to find the Hamilton Fox Baptism in Yeovil. George was described as a Basketmaker on Hamilton's baptism. The 1851 and 1861 Census tell us more about George's wife Elizabeth and their 4 children:

1851 Census: H0109; Piece: 1858; Folio: 693, Page: 18
Minterne Magna, Dorset

Elizabeth Fox, 33, Salisbury, Wiltshire
Hamilton Fox, 9, Minterne, Dorset
Charlotte Fox, 6, Minterne, Dorset
Jane Fox, 7 months, Minterne, Dorset

1861 Census: RG09; Piece: 354; Folio: 54, Page: 19
28 Union Street, Lambeth, London

Elizabeth Fox, 43, Needlewoman, Salisbury, Wiltshire
Charlotte Fox, 16, House Servant, Middlemarsh, Dorset
Jane Fox, 10, Middlemarsh, Dorset
Wm George Fox, 2, Erne, Dorset (believed to mean Minterne or Cerne Abbas)

Now, I have found Jane Fox's baptism in Minterne Magna in 1850 where George is described once again as a Basket Maker as he was on the Marriage Record in 1838 to Elizabeth Fenton. So, I haven't yet found the baptisms for Charlotte or William George Fox.

So, given William George Fox's baptism hasn't yet be found in 1858/9, what we do know when William George marries in 1882 is that he also states his father as George Fox (a Fancy Box maker).

Questions then:
1. Where are the baptims of Charlotte and William George
2. If we assume George Fox died circa late 1850s/1860 (in 1861, Elizabeth clearly says she was a widow) where is he in 1841, 1851 Census?

Thoughts?

Thank you all

Keith

On George Fox's marriage record in 1838 he says his father is Jacob. There is a baptism in Wootton Glanville which could be him - 27 Mar 1796 s/o Jacob and Elizabeth. This would match with age at death. Unfortunately marriage record only says he was of full age (i.e. 21 or over). Quite an age difference between him and Elizabeth

Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott
Essex/Herts: Livermore, Holgate, Law, Day, Myson, Boyton

Thanks Lizzie. I agree, the Wooton Glanville baptism in 1796 may very well be the George Fox I am seeking. Maybe George's marriage to Elizabeth Fenton was a 2nd marriage given the age difference?

Am baffled as to where they were in 1841, maybe they were hiding under one of G's baskets!

It does look like the death in 1850 is his which means William George came from different stock and why his birth is so elusive, but I guess the only way to be sure is to see if the death gives occupation/details of spouse that match :-\

Agreed. I need both the 1950 Death Cert for George and also William G Fox Death Certs and maybe there will be some help there
Thanks again
