qld midwives
« on: Friday 09 June 17 16:37 BST (UK) »
My great grand mother  Ann Norah Hart  was a midwife in Rockhampton  till 1929. Does anybody
know if midwives in colonial times were registered and if they were  where  such a record might
exist?
                                                   Thanks

Hi Pwh,

The amended 1911 Queensland Health Act paragraph 82 refers to the Establishment of a Nurses Registration Board as of 1st January 1912 and the registration of duly qualified nurses by the Nurses Registration Board for three categories.

General nurse.
Midwifery nurse.
Mental nurse.

Paragraph 85 refers to being registered as a midwife and it basically says, as of 1st January 1912 persons holding a certificate of midwifery from a Hospital or other Institution recognised by the Board and they can prove that they had received systematic midwifery training from a medical practitioner and matron from that Hospital or other Institution then those persons shall be entitled to be registered as a midwife for the cost of 10 shillings.

The Register of Nurses for the three categories was to be Gazetted each January.

Gerry

My OH's daughter recently retired from Qld Nurses Registration Board, so I'll try to find out if she knows where you can find your info.
(Left a message on her phone but don't know how long a reply will take  ::)  ::)  ::) )

If the family story is correct  she  became a  midwife  sometime  around the
1870s and remained one  till her 82nd birthday  and helped deliver  1125  babies. I wonder
how she would have fitted  into  the arrangements in the 1911 legislation.

Yes that is her  and her whole life story is indeed fascinating  with and old scandal
that was played out in the newspapers and courts  of colonial Australia.

Yes I am aware of that thesis. As soon as I have time I will  read it properly.
