And I also had a quick peep at the census.. more reasons to think that James BURDIN is James BURDEN.

Thanks for all of that.  Yes I did look at the census and found him in 1861 but not 1871.

There is no birth registration for a James BURDIN in 1847 in Dorset, only your James.
You can check for yourself.

Thanks Cando
I noticed that he was christened on 28h March 1847 Bloxworth Dorset. How do you find out what church that happened. Bridget was a Catholic. Tomorrow I am going to Genealogy Society  to see if they have St Patrick's Church baptisms back in 1866-69. A long shot but I know he is buried in the Catholic part of the cemetery and if you were not a Catholic that could not happen. He was married at St Patrick's and it did not say in the vestry etc if he was not a Catholic. Gets complicated.
They did not register all their children either. There are three missing. Charles (I have seen his baptism) Arthur Joseph and a girl who could be named Rose or Annie Marie. She is only known at Mrs.J Shephard married at Glenelg. This is known from obituary. SO I have quite a lot to look at.

FamilySearch has this baptism record which you probably have:
James BURDEN, Christening, 28 Mar 1847
Event Place: Parish church, Bloxworth, Dorset, England
Parents: John Burden, labourer, Eliza Burden; abode: Bloxworth

An on-line image is from the parish register so it seems safe to say that he was baptised at St Andrew's church, Bloxworth which would be Church of England.
You can google it, and there is a photo here

I doubt James was RC.  Only St Andrews C of E at Bloxworth.
http://www.opcdorset.org/BloxworthFiles/Bloxworth.htm

Of course it is well known that sections of the SA community were reluctant to register their children's births with the civil authorities.  This included the Roman Catholics and Scottish.  Much has been written about the problems with missing bdm's in SA. However they were 'caught' when they married and died :P  I'm afraid after years of researching I don't get 'hung up' on religions.  I have many folk in my tree of many religious persuasions.  People were not always honest when giving their information to ministers/priests/registrars.  Want to get married in a hurry....just agree with whatever is suggested :P :P

James and Bridget had three sons and five daughters according to the death notices.
