HEXTALL's from Leicester
« on: Saturday 10 June 17 13:46 BST (UK) »
I have William Hextall born circ 1815, convicted in LeicesterQS Jan 1837, of stealing cows, transported to Tasmania for life. Williams record states his native place as Sapcote.
I have Joseph Hextall, born circ 1819 also convicted in same QS in Jun 1837 of essentially the same crime, transported to NSW for  life.
William married in 1836 and had a daughter, Jane Maria in 1836, before transportation.
How can I prove, or disprove these 2 men are related?
Thanks

There is a possible christening for William?

Date of Birth: 19th December 1817
Christened: 15th January 1818  at Weslyan Methodist, Hinckley
William Hextall, son of William & Mary

(Sapcote is just a few miles from Hinckley)

And a possible christening for Joseph:

Date of Birth: 27th July 1819
Christened: 11th November 1832  at Carlton by Market Bosworth, Leicestershire
Joseph Hextall, son of John & Catherine

(Carlton is 14 miles from Sapcote?)
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

I'm only seeing one Joseph HEXTALL on the convict's lists. He was born ~1812 Leics.?

His crime was "maiming a cow". ( from a newspaper article it looks as though it was due to being jilted by his girlfriend).

The other baptism I can see is

Joseph Hextall 27 Mar 1812, Redmile, son of Joseph and Elizabeth

Looking a head, on transportation,

Occupations
Joseph....brickmaker
William...butcher

I have tried to get some clues from the naming patterns for their children.
Josephs children were..Hannah, Joseph, Mary, George, Thomas, Edgar and Elizabeth.
Williams were..Thomas William and Mary Agnes.  he only had 2 known children.+Jane Maria who he left in the UK.
Are there any Leic records online that I can access? There are so many possibles that I can't confirm.
Just seems too much of a coincidence with them both being convicted in the same court in the same year.

Oh well.
No...I don't understand.

Joseph's crime was different.  (also he was living in Sutton Cheney?)

Why link the two together. ???

as I can't find a confirmed baptism for either William or Joseph, it still remains a possibility.
The ages on conviction, and transportation, and marriage, and death all give a general idea, but nothing definite.
Family old-timers still tell rumors of a family  connection, but nothing definite.
Will have to try and find baptismal records somehow.

There is a Carlton born Joseph Hextall on the 1851 census (it approximates his YOB as 1820) which is almost certainly going to be the same dude as the 1819 born one, so it obviously wasn't him who was transported for life.
