Hi Phil,

Sometimes when children were born illegitimately, the fathers surname was given as a middle name.  Sometimes surnames as a middle name were also a maiden name of a mother, grandmother etc.  I note with interest the middle name of Simmons.

Will see if I can find at least a mothers name for you.

Hi Phil,

Have found an article of Dorothy's wedding in 1930 in the Hendon & Finchley Times dated 12 Sept 1930.  It describes what she wore beautifully and although it mentions relatives of the groom, there is not one mention of her family.  Her bridesmaids were a cousin of the groom and a friend of hers.  Dorothy was given away by a friend of both her and the groom by the name of William Fowler.

Have found Dorothy on the 1930 Electoral Roll living at 27 Stratford Rd, Hendon with William Fowler and his wife Annie Elizabeth May (nee Kenchatt) also there is a Emma Canham.

There are not many people by the surname of Clift living in Hendon and it is easy to view them all at www.freebmd.org.uk, there is not a marriage of a female Clift that jumps out tho'.

This seems to be her marriage...

Dorothy S Clift & Arthur W S Gould registered Sept qtr 1930 Hendon RD ref 3a 1222

And her death...

Dorothy Simmons Gould b 9 Dec 1907 death registered Dec 1988 aged 81, Maidstone, Kent RD
ref: vol 16 Page:    1315

I think this is one case that would probably benefit splashing out £9-25 on a birth cert  ;D

Possibly her mum was a single lady and had to give her daughter up for someone else to look after whilst mum went out to work.

Hence why you really need the birth cert to progress this one any further.

I agree with Carol8353.  Couldn't find a baptism record or living with a potential mother on the electoral register.
