Yorkshire Soldiers who fought in the American Revolution
« on: Sunday 11 June 17 00:17 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction to obtain further information on the above.  I have a Yorkshire soldier (Northallerton area of North Yorkshire), born approximately 1743, who died in the American Revolution but have no idea where to start.

Thank you

Perhaps if you gave his name, we might be able to help.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thank you for your reply.

His name is James Peacock.  One of his sons, who I think was also called James, apparently died in the marine service some time before 1817, but again I don't know where to start with that.  Would that be the Royal Navy do you think.

I can't help with service records.  Two possibles for James

28 October 1744 Fylingdale son of James

14 May 1744 Pickering son of Frans

Hi,

James Peacock born 1742 Borrowby, Yorkshire son of Thomas Peacock (James was a lapsed Quaker).  Unfortunately I don't know which regiment he served in.  I know he was a soldier from the baptism records of his children and that he died in the American Revolution from a record for one of his children.

Thank you for the list of regiments.  Perhaps I need to pop over to Kew and look at any records they may have

You need the Musters & pay books but without a Regt. it's going to be a long trawl.

There is a James Peacock in the Royal Navy Ships Musters:

1780/1781 - Royal Oak
1781 - Santa Monica (I think it says returned to proper(?) ship 6 Jun 1781)

It isn't a subject I'm particularly familiar with, but Google tells me they were both involved in the American Revolutionary War:

The Royal Oak was involved in the Battle of Chesapeake, which I believe was a key battle.
