James LANIGAN. Did he die in NSW?
« on: Sunday 11 June 17 04:38 BST (UK) »
Hello,

For years I have been searching for my husband's grandfather.

James LANIGAN was born in Piltown, Kilkenny, Ireland in 1861. Parents- Michael Lanigan & Margaret nee Delaunty (Delahanty?)

James emigrated to New Zealand as a young man along with his older brothers, Pierce, John & Thomas.

James married, fathered three children in New Zealand and sometime in the late 1890's-early 1900's, is known to have "skipped" the country and gone to Sydney, leaving behind his wife and children, supposedly to look for work. There is no evidence to suggest that he returned to New Zealand.

A death was registered @ Warren, NSW in 1920 for one James Lanigan. Father recorded as Michael & mother as Marjory. As a long shot, I'm wondering if any further details can be provided about this James Lanigan to eliminate him or otherwise from my search.

Any information gratefully received.

Minniehaha.

Right or wrong, there is a tree on A***y with James LANIGAN born 16 July 1864 Tullamain Tipperary Ireland, to Michael LANIGAN and Mary BREEN, died Warren NSW 1920.  On that tree, this Michael came to Australia age 11, in 1879 with his widowed mother and 7 siblings.

Hi,

The New Zealand newspapers have articles on a fire at Armadale Road Remuera of a 5 roomed house owned by a Mr G. Parker and occupied by a James Lanigan. The house was destroyed.

Probably an opportunistic time to leave NZ for NSW if it was him.

Thank you both for your input.

The mother's name of Mary as found by Ambly differs from the one I found i.e. Marjory. Same place however, Warren and same year.

The occupation found by Cando would, I think, be fitting for the man I am seeking.

Before sending for any certificates I would like to try and "firm" this one up a bit more.

Hello Gerry,

Yes, I have come across this report:

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/AS19120918.2.71?query=james%20lanigan

However this James Lanigan can be discounted because we know he was not in New Zealand and had not been since around the turn of the century. This leads me to a suspicion that there was another man with the same name living in Auckland. References to 'hotel proprietor' found for possibly this second James Lanigan.

The NZ Electoral Rolls have Theresa Lanigan as married in the 1919 roll and as a widow in the 1928 roll.

Maybe you could send an "Ask A Librarian" message to the Auckland Library or archives and get them to have a look at the rolls after 1919 to see when Theresa was first listed as a widow.

Hello Gerry,

Now that could be interesting. So far all I have had to work on is that when Theresa died in 1943 she was recorded as being a widow.

So sometime between 1919 and 1928 her marital status changed. I will definitely investigate this further. Thank you....
