Thomas Michael Flaherty
« on: Sunday 11 June 17 20:41 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find a birth or baptism record of my great grandfather, Thomas Michael Flaherty, born about 1847-1849 in Ireland.  (Galway according to verbal family history)
He emigrated to Pittsburgh in 1873. He had a sister, Mary Flaherty,  born around the same  time and who also emigrated to Pittsburgh. I believe their parents were parents Patrick Flaherty and Honoria (maiden name not known.)  I don’t believe the parents emigrated.

I would like to know where and when my great grandfather was born or baptised; where and when his parents were married and if he had any more siblings.

I hope you can help.  Thank  you

Welcome to RootsChat katerisingsun.
Usually you will need more than just a county to have a chance of finding a record.
Thomas Michael was born before Civil Registration so you would need to find his Baptisim, not all parish registers survive for the dates you need.
If he was RC you can look here http://registers.nli.ie/
That site is not searchable by name but Ancestery, FindMyPast and RootsIreland have searchable transcripts all three are subscription sites.
Unfortunately Galway is one of the counties where quite a few of the registers for the dates you need are lost.

Thank you for your response.  Unfortunately, all I have are the ship manifest and death certificate info.  I have spent years looking for more - 1880 census, RC Diocese marriage records here, but nothing is found.  I have looked at http://registers.nli.ie/ even trying to find his parent's marriage records without success.  I do appreciate your effort to help.  Thank you

Hi katerisingsun,

Following on from Sinann's comment.  I have tried searching on Ancestry  and cannot find the information you are looking for; but my searching is not perfect, perhaps someone can check what I am saying.

I hope someone can find the information you need.

Good luck

Hi Katerisingsun.

I have been trying to give your problem a bit of thought but I don't seem to be getting close.
The earliest marriage of a Patrick Flaherty to someone called Honoria  in Galway,I can find was in 1854 the details are:

23rd October 1854 at Tuam Patrick Faherty married Honoria Corlis (or Corly)
http://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000632080#page/1/mode/1up

This would only work if Thomas Michael Faherty's mother died and his father Patrick Faherty remarried to someone called Honoria.

With regard to the baptism of Thomas Michael Flaherty, to a father called Patrick in the period 1847 to 1849 The only record I can find is:

Bapt August 1848 Thomas Flaherty Father Pat Flaherty mother Cath Moran at St Nicholas North & East , Galway City.
http://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000634217#page/1/mode/1up

I cannot fit a Mary Flaherty into the sequence although there is a baptism if a Maria Flaherty father Patrick Flaherty mother Catherine Moran on 31st January 1845 but that took place in Loughrea, Galway
http://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000632950#page/1/mode/1up

The above Maria had a brother Michael also baptised at Loughrea father Patrick Flaherty mother Catherine Moran on 10th August 1846.
http://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000632950#page/1/mode/1up

There is also a baptism for a Thomas Flaherty 12th January 1846 at Tynagh but the father is a Martin Flaherty with a mother called Honor Mulkern
http://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000632962#page/1/mode/1up

I do not think the above is what you are after but I thought it worth recording my efforts!!
Sorry I cannot be of more help

Regards

Thank you so much.  I have spent the whole day today searching with no success.  Here is the only other info I have.

Thomas had a sister Mary married to a James Adley. They lived in Pittsburgh. The 1870 census says she is 25 years old, DOB 1845 while her death certificate indicates she was born in 1848.

In 1898 a Patrick Flaherty lived with Mary and her husband.  Thomas's death certificate says he came there to live in late 1898.  Was Patrick a brother?  Were Thomas and Mary twins, their possible birth dates are so close.

The death certificate for both Thomas and Mary give parents names as Patrick and Honora.

I am so grateful for your reply and your efforts.   Thank you so much, Kate
