Great Grandfather's Presentation Book.
« on: Sunday 11 June 17 22:54 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I have in my possession a book entitled 'Over The Holy Land' by the Rev J A Wylie LL D. Inscribed on the inside front cover is the following:

George A Parker
P M Bible Class
Linton Heath
November 24th 1893

George Albert Parker (1877-1952) was my Great Grandfather & the book was presumably presented to him. Linton Heath is near Burton on Trent in Derbyshire/Staffordshire, it seems to be recorded as in one or the other county in lots of records.

What I would like to know is what would the letters P & M stand for & why would he have been presented with the book & where? School?

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

Hi Claire,

Many thanks for your replies, very much appreciated.

As far as I know, there isn't any Non Conformity in the family, all baptisms, marriages & burials took place in C of E churches. I did wonder myself if the letters P & M stood for Primitive Methodist but wasn't sure. George Albert would have been 16 when he received/was presented with the book.

Many thanks for the info re the Rev J A Wylie, much appreciated.

Kind regards

David

Could the simple answer be  that PM refers to"Afternoon Bible Class"...maybe Sunday School.

November 24th 1893 was a Friday. There was a Primitive Methodist Chapel in Linton Heath.

You can see the Primitive Methodist Chapel on the map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/428607/316588/12/100613 you will have to change the zoom level. There was also a Weslyan Methodist Chapel.
