Dorathea HOOPER where was she after arriving in Australia?
« on: Monday 12 June 17 17:54 BST (UK) »
Hi there
Dorathea Georgina HOOPER came to Australia on board the "Aberdeen" in 1885. On the same ship were other Hoopers but I haven't been able to establish close links between she and they. Dora married Walter GOSTELOW in Sydney in 1897.

Where might she have been in the intervening years, can anyone suggest? Have searched directories etc with no luck. Probably being a single woman she wasn't mentioned there but she was possibly working.
Be grateful for any suggestions or guidance
Thanks a lot
Meegan

An online tree suggests she arrived in Sydney on the Aberdeen in October 1885

1885 'ARRIVAL OF THE ABERDEEN WITH GOVERNMENT IMMIGRANTS.', The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954), 26 October, p. 6. , viewed 13 Jun 2017, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article13601651

She is on the passenger list as Dora Hooper (20) with Isabelle Hooper (17), domestic servants.

If this is your Dorothea, then she could be the Dora Hooper (23) shop assistant, 254 Victoria st mentioned here

1889 'Casualties.', Evening News (Sydney, NSW : 1869 - 1931), 18 January, p. 6. , viewed 13 Jun 2017, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article108786714

Apart from her sister Isabel, the other HOOPERs were probably not related.  They were from different counties, Dorset and Hampshire.

Thanks Mathew, I will chase up that address in PO directories and others. I thought I had tried Dora Hooper in Trove but obviously not. The age quoted certainly fits with my Dora.
I know what happened to Isabella over the years but not Dora so will follow that up
Cheers and many thanks
Meegan
