Edwin BRIGHT of Croydon
« on: Monday 12 June 17 19:16 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I am seeking info regarding a young man called Edwin BRIGHT, my grandfather. He was born in Croydon in 1877 to James and Jane Bright in Croydon. In 1891 he is a scholar living with his parents at 128 Dennett Road. He then disappears until he marries my grandma, Edith Alice SINDEN in 1913. he is no longer with his parents on the 1901 or 1911 census BUT i have found an Edwin Bright on both censuses at Darenth Asylum.

The Asylum records which are held at the LMA do not cover the years I require so I'm now looking for a school record and maybe his reason for leaving? Looking at the address I am assuming Lanfranc school being likely. Their records are not at Croydon Museum so I have emailed them to see what is available.

I have searched his WW2 papers on joining up in 1916 but no questions are asked about mental health!!!

Any other suggestions anyone?

Thanks

Heather

Looking at Edwin/Edward's Service record for WW1 he was previously in the Suffolk Regiment.

Attested - 15 Nov 1897 and transferred to Army Reserve - 8 Jan 1906

For the 1901 census he was in Malta.

JJen, thank you so much.

I will seek out the 1901 census now... so happy he wasn't in the hospital :)

Hi Heather,

I have not looked for Edwin/Edward on the 1901 census, his service record shows him being in Malta during that period. I believe that Overseas Service personnel were not include in any census until 1911, previously there was only a headcount.

His previous Service record is available on FindMyPast.
