On the 1861 census I have David and Phoebe BACON and family living at Artichoke Common, and on the 1871 census they are at what appears to be Herongate Rd. I can find a location called Herongate on Googlemaps but no road by that name, and searches for the Common throw up lots of restaurants. Are these places still in existence? All help appreciated.

The Toby Carvery on the edge of Shenfield Common was (is) called The Artichoke. I go there quite often!  And is at the top of Ingrave Road (which passed through the village of Herongate)
Thus all of what has been said makes abundant sense.

Ah, that would explain why it kept popping up on Google  :D Sadly, it's a bit far away for a night out.
