Discovered James Masons death-1900 Rochford District, confirmed by his will (then living in Great Wakering) as he left his estate partly to a John Millbank.

HAve you purchased a copy of the actual Will?
I see from the Index entry that his Executors were John Milbank and Thomas Wiggins.

That does not mean they were the beneficiaries of the Estate though. You need to get a copy of the Will to find that out.

There's an Ellen Mason b Chelmsford c1850, married, working as a sick nurse in East Teignmouth, Devon on 1891. Possible?

If James Mason of Great Wakering is the one you are looking for he was buried Great Wakering 21 April 1900 age 59.
The will and its contents will prove or disprove.

ADDED
I don't think the Rochford 1900 death is yours.
The James Mason born 1841 Great Wakering became a mariner and can be followed on the census 1841-1891. He is the son of John Mason and Tamar Grimes, actually registered 1840 Rochford Union mmn Grimes.
After John Mason dies Tamar married Jacob Milbank Say 10 June 1848 at Great Wakering, see also 1851 census James Mason aged 10 and brother Samuel Mason 8 in household of Jacob Milbank Say 29 and Tamar age 29, with children Hannah Milbank Say 3 and William Milbank Say age 1

Thanks so much for the further replies.
Rather jumped to conclusions regarding that particular Millbank connection. The 1891 Devon entry is interesting.
Will try and delve deeper, very intrigued as to what happened.

Still looking!
The 1881 census for Margeretting lists --as you say Amondg--James Mason at the Eagle, this is number 100 in the census. The next page of the census, number 110 refers to another Eagle the licensee being Stephen Wright born Norwich.
I cannot find any reference on line to two Eagles in Margaretting.
Wondered --Amondg--if there were two,James Mason's being the Spreading Eagle as you suggest?

I am now totally confused!!
James Mason's father was BENJAMIN Mason (as the wedding certificate shows and the Essex Standard reports).
Beatrice Helen Mason baptised in Margaretting 1875 to James and Ellen,James a publican.1901 and 1911 censuses confirm her place and date of birth.
The 1851 census for Stoke upon Trent shows James Mason age 9,born Hanley (agreeing with the 1881 Margaretting census),but his father is SAMUEL Mason.
Should really appreciate any suggestions as to what is going on here !!

From the notes of Essex Pub History
The pub listed on the census re James Mason as The Eagle, is known locally as the Spreading Eagle.

The parish registers online for Margretting at the Essex Record Office, burials only go to 1897 and James Mason is not listed to that point so presumably still alive as of 1897.

Places of birth on census records should not be taken at face value, it may be the last place he remembers living and assumed he was born there.

What about the witnesses to the marriage Richard Mason and Catherine Mason, is Richard a brother
and Catherine a sister or are they husband and wife?

They were husband and wife, Richard Mason married Catherine Crossland 1859 in Nottinghamshire.

James gave their address of 4 Cloudsly Square when he applied for a marriage license.

Richard is a carpenter and alternately gives his POB as Hannly or Stoke on Trent Staffordshire.

1841 census
Union Street, Swinnerton, near Stoke on Trent Staffordshire
Benjamin Mason 40 carpenter  looks like not born in county
Ann 40                                   ditto
Robert 16
Richard 10
Elleanor 6  (later Elleanor Jane)
Mary Anne 4
JAMES 1

children all born in county.

Still checking on what happened to Benjamin as 1851 and 1861 Elleanor Jane Mason is with an aunt and uncle James and Mary Henshaw in Worcestershire, states born Hunelly Staffordshire.
