Calling experts on Doncaster geography...
« on: Tuesday 13 June 17 22:50 BST (UK) »
In the 1841 census, I find my ancestor William Terry living at 'Barr' in Chapel Haddlesey.

In 1851, I see him living at Toll Barr in Wheatley parish, Doncaster – presumably modern-day Toll Barr?

And in 1871 I find his son, Lawrence Terry, living at Toll Barr House on Dodworth Road.

Can someone enlighten me as to whether these places are likely to be the same geographical location / address or whether every town had a 'toll bar'?

The toll bar is going to be on the turnpike, so not every town will have one.

Its associated with the road, not a town.

Many thanks. Is there a way to see where these turnpikes were? Sounds like you're saying they could be different ones, but cropping up because the family were in the business of extracting tolls?

Barr or Now Toll Barr was on the old Doncaster to Selby Turnpike. Search Turnpikes of England and Wales and it is shown under West Yorkshire. It is the route of the now A19.
It was the site of the tollhouse for the road and had a gate or Barr in Yorkshire

They are in different areas of Yorkshire, Chapel Haddlesley is approx 30 mile away from Dodworth and Doncaster approx 18 mile. Dodworth is a village not a town and what you see now of the Toll Bar is a staggered junction.
