I also found a marriage for an Adolphus HOUGHTON in 1850 with father Henry and his wife is on the later census as married and head of house living in Kent until she remarried.  There appear to be children of this marriage.

A transcription of this marriage cert would either confirm or eliminate the above Adolphus with father Henry.

On the 19th instant, at the Sydney Infirmary, after a long and painful illness, ADOLPHUS ARTHUR HOUGHTON, leaving a wife and four helpless children to mourn his loss. Deceased was a native of Kent, England.

This man is ship's crew.  Various trips arriving Sydney with A. HOUGHTON/ Arthur HOUGHTON and Adolphus HOUGHTON with similar ages and from Kent and occupation fireman and donkey as ships crew member.

I wonder what Adolphus noted as his occupation on his marriage certificate?

More research needed.

Kris I now see you have a private tree on ancestry and there are many private and public trees for Alfred Charles HOUGHTON however one public tree has Agnes Isabella NUGENT as wife. As you mentioned 'biological great-grandfather' I'm assuming this was a relationship.  I wish I'd looked prior to spending much time searching for information.  Oh well so many trees are wrong and I usually don't bother anyway.
