What happened to William Dickson
« on: Wednesday 14 June 17 11:20 BST (UK) »
I am completely stuck, I can't find the death of my grt grt grandfather William Dickson.

Here is what I have on him so far:

28 June 1833 in Lesmahagow parents Thomas Dickson and Elizabeth Clelland
1851 Census living in Lesmahagow with his widowed mother
10 Apr 1853 marries Catherine McManus in Kirkfieldbank
c1854 son Thomas born according to 1861 census, no birth/baptism record found yet
8 Oct 1857 son Francis born in Kirkfieldbank William registers birth on same day William registered the birth of his sister's twins Mary and Thomas Russell
10 Jan 1861 daughter Margaret born in Nemphlar
1861 census family have moved to Calton, recorded as Dixan
26 Dec 1861 Catherine his wife dies cause of death given as "burst a blood vessel"
28 Apr 1863 William remarries  to Mary Wright in Lesmahagow
19 Oct 1863 son Richard born Lesmahagow(my grt grandfather)
17 Jun 1866 daughter Mary born Lesmahagow
5 Jul 1866 wife Mary dies after being found in well
29 Oct 1866 daughter Mary dies New Lanark (failure to thrive)

Registering Mary's death is the last record I have of William.  Richard is with his Aunt in 1871.  Yesterday I sat in the SP centre and went through deaths for William Dickson all the way through to 1843.  I cannot find a trace of him :(.

He is in the 1871 census living as a Lodger at Piper Row Robert Parks, Avondale, Lanarkshire. Age is 37 and he is a widower. Ancestry have his place of birth as Esmayhard, Lanarkshire!? But FindMyPast entry says Lesmuhagow.

Even by Ancestry's remarkably low standards that transcription is something else again :)
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
