Emily & Jesse BUCKET(T) - No trace to be found
« on: Friday 16 June 17 15:16 BST (UK) »
My Great-grandfather, Joseph Evans, married Emily Buckett at St Michael's in Rushall, Staffordshire on 28th September 1874.  Her father was recorded on the marriage certificate as Jesse Buckett, a soldier. The only census return for Emily in 1881, gives her p.o.b. as Portsmouth and her age as 26.  I have been unable to find any record of Emily's birth or census records prior to her marriage anywhere in the UK. Neither have I been able to a single public record for her father - no birth, marriage or military record.  Do you think it possible that there is any further detail available from the parish records that might help me track down this elusive family; I have been looking for them for over 10 years. I am beginning to suspect that she may have used a false name to marry. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you. Chris

Hiya Chris

There is an Emily Buckett registered Alverstoke 1855 mothers maiden name Little I cant find a marriage for a Buckett and Little so she may have been illegitimate and the mother has registered her under her fathers name

My mothers surname was Bowkett which is often mistranslated as Buckett

The only other two are Emily Agnes and Emily Jane both died young

With the regards to the birth of Emily Buckett if you view the copy that the transcriptions were made from you will find their are in fact two entries, there is a second for an Emma Bucket with matching references.

If this is your Emily could she have been a twin?

MAybe a red herring, but I see there is an Anna MAria Buckettt with mmn Little born in Worthing Reg District in 1853.

Here she is in 1861, and obviously there has been the combination of two families here since her birth.

1861
Arundel Road
Littlehampton
Mary E Blackman 41 Mariners wife bn Queensboro Kent
Matilda Bucket  dtr 18 bn Littlehampton
John Blackman 10 son bn Littlehampton
Anna M Bucket 8 dtr bn Littlehampton

Chr Littlehampton 1 May 1853, Anna Maria Bucket, parents Mary Elizabeth and William

1851
River Rd
Littlehampton
William Bucket 60 seaman bn Sussex Trotton
Elizabeth 30 bn Queensborough Essex
Matilda 8  bn Littlehampton
John R  5 bn L'hampton

and a possibility for Blackmans first family-
1851
Surrey Street Littlehampton
Charlotte Blackman 31 mariners wife bn Poling Sussex
John L  son 5 mths bn L'hampton
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Long shot I know but look for a Jesse Bowkett on a loose search it's a Jesse Beckett that fits the right age bracket only one I can find that is a remote possibility

It's might be worth ordering that birth certificate

Thanks for looking at this. I have investigated this birth and her father (at least according to her birth certificate), was William Buckett, a merchant seaman.
