Beattie Family in Lairg
« on: Friday 16 June 17 19:41 BST (UK) »
Mary Beattie was married to Murdo Maclennan, Shepherd.
They were living at Creanich, Lairg at time of Marys death in 1904.
She was daughter of David and Isabella Beattie.
Trying to locate where Mary and her parents are buried, or indeed any information on Beattie family.
David Beattie was a shepherd but I do not know where.
Wonder would he have been taken north at time of Clearances.

What year was Mary born, how old when she died, where did she die?

Does it give an address where she died on the DC &/or her Usual Residence?

Did she predecease husband Murdo?

Annie

Added....Ditto the above for David and Isabella Beattie & what was Isabella's maiden name?

I wonder if this was their abode...looks idyllic, pity it is now derelict;

Looks like Mary's parents died in Dumfries?

BEATTIE ISABELLA 63
1916
839/ 52
Langholm or Staplegorton

JOHNSTONE ISABELLA 63
1916
839/ 52
Langholm or Staplegorton

That death would give both her parents names with mother's maiden name (if known to the informant).
It should also tell you if she was widow of/or married to, with husband's name to give you a window to search for David.

A son?

BEATTIE DAVID JOHNSTONE 78
1940
819/ 30
Dornock (Dumfries)

Thank you so much for this information.
This is the family I am interested in.
Will have to try and find them in census to see when they came north.
Wonder if what is left of house is ever visible in dry spells when loch level drops.
Anyway, I appreciate the info.

It appears that although the water level has risen the cottage is still accessible.

Not sure if you looked at all the other pics (down right hand side of earlier link I gave you)?

Different views of the cottage;

There's reference to Murdo here on page 6:

Sallachy North Loch Shin-side, Parish of Lairg, Sutherland

http://her.highland.gov.uk/hbsmrgatewayhighland/DataFiles/LibraryLinkFiles/94640.pdf

"The main dwelling at Creanich, now dilapidated, but still roofed, appears to have been inhabited
up until around the 1940s (Dagg, 2005) by a shepherd and his family. Indeed, as an example, the
1891 census records that one Murdo MacLennan, shepherd, lived there with his wife, four
daughters, and a general servant, and another shepherd, William McKenzie was boarding there
too."

From clamaclennan website, can't access full details as it's a fee paying site....

Murdo Mclennan  b Abt 1860, Dumfries-shire
Mary Beattie b abt 1860 Eskdalemuir, Dumfries
Flora McLennan b. Abt 1887 Lairg, Sutherland
Margaret Jane McLennan b. Abt 1889 Lairg, Sutherland
Duncanina McLennan b. 8 Sep 1890 Lairg, Sutherland
Jane McLennan b. Abt 1898 Lairg, Sutherland

I can add that Isabella Beattie died in Rogart August 1900 aged 66 and David Beattie also died in Rogart July 1911 aged 75.
Mary Maclennan died at Creanich 23 July 1904 aged 44 and Murdo died at Lochside August 1912 aged 66. Taken from death certificates. Murdo's brother Donald living at Okyell signed death certificate.
Murdo and Mary had another 2 sons, David and Alexander.
Looked in Lairg Churchyard booklet but could not find any reference to them being buried there.
Thanks for your help it is much appreciated.
