Isobell EDMONDSON
« on: Saturday 17 June 17 14:11 BST (UK) »
Hoping someone can help me.

According to information given to me years ago by my cousin (all stuff is packed so can't check)....
Isobell Baxter was born in Scotland and married George Downey EDMONDSON.

She apparently died in Forest Creek (which is now Castlemaine area) and I can't find her burial.

I've also looked on Vic BDM's and can't find her death.  It supposedly happened 8 June 1852.

Nothing in Trove either.

Hoping to go one more step back on her line.

If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Jackie you are seeking a death/burial record prior to civil registration in Victoria.  If there was no parish record to transcribe to the Vic BDM then you may have difficulty locating any other information.

This link is a good summary of the early burials and cemeteries at Castlemaine.  There are other more detailed articles but I can't locate my copies at the moment.

You could contact the groups as suggested on the link.

EDMONSON George
BAXTER Isobell
Marriage 4 Dec 1833  Kilmacolm,Renfrew,Scotland

The 1841 census has her aged 25 ie born c1816.  Not sure if the ages were rounded down as in the English census.

Mistranscribed surnames

1841 Living at Niddry Street, Paisley Low
EDMINSON George 25  Born Renfrewshire   Iron Dresser
EDMINTON Isabella 25  Born Renfrewshire
EDMINSON Mary 6  Born Renfrewshire
EDMINSON Janet 5 Born Renfrewshire
EDMINTON George 3 Born Renfrewshire

I then found an online tree which has information taken from a 'letter' - snippets of when the family moved to Ayr and details of travel to Australia.

The family arrived in Aug 1848 on the CHEAPSIDE with surname EDMUND. George is aged 35, Isabella 38, Janette 12, George 10, Isabella 7 and John infant.

I did wonder if Isabella's date of death was taken from George's second marriage certificate.  If he described himself as a widower, he would be asked the date of death [and occasionally the place] of his deceased wife.

Have you searched on Scotlands People or familysearch.org for Isabella's birth?

Cheers
Cando

Jackie

My resource mentions 'Forest Creek' now known as Chewton so maybe check out this link too:

http://www.australiancemeteries.com.au/vic/mt_alexander/chewton.htm

As Cando mentions, it could be difficult as most records seem to begin in 1853 or late 1852.

Bit puzzled here.  Castlemaine was known as Forest Creek and Forest Creek runs through Chewton.  As we are seeking a burial in 1852 the burial may not have even been in a cemetery.

Hi Cando and Bitzar,

Cando,
I didn't know about Mary.  I don't have access to census records.
I've not searched Scotlands People and it's been years since I searched this family on familysearch.org.
Will have to go have another look now.

Bitzar,

I checked Chewton Cemetery online.  There is no pic of a headstone.  Maybe she didn't have one in the first place.

Thanks to you both.
The thot plickens and I hope I can find something somewhere.
