Chilton Colling?
« on: Sunday 18 June 17 20:27 BST (UK) »
Hi all
Just a quick one please. Does a place called Chilton Colling actually exist in Durham, and if so is it anywhere near Billingham? Google has been less than helpful with regard to the former.
Many thanks

Could it be Chilton Colliery? That's maybe about 10 miles from Billingham.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Thanks Arthur - I guess that's possible. Was there a community there? ONly ask as it's listed as a birthplace.

If you follow the link that Stan gave and click the third link against Maps you'll get a map showing where Chilton Colliery was in relation to nearby places. It looks as though (the original?) Chilton village was further east, near Mainsforth Colliery, so they may have written Chilton Colliery as a way to differentiate it.

The following map gives a larger scale view of the area near the colliery, including a row of houses at Dene Bridge Row:

Later there was also a lot of housing around Chilton Buildings and along the road from Dene Bridge Row, as shown on this more recent map:

How old is the person? Chilton Colliery was not opened until 1872. There is one person in the 1911 census who gives his birth place as Chilton Colliery, but he was born in 1848, and another who was born in 1867.

Hi Stan
Thanks for all your help so far. The man I'm looking at is a Thomas Henderson, born 1879 and in the 1911 census living in Walthamstow. I'm trying to see if he is the same Thomas Henderson who is in my tree born 1879 in Billingham (1881 and 1891 census).
Arthur - thanks very much for those links. I'll look into them tomorrow.
Cheers
Stuart

The one in 1911 is unlikely to be the same person as the one born in Billingham.  There is a Thomas Henderson, born c1879 Chilton Colliery in earlier census & he is the son of David & Mary Jane Henderson.

I see that Thomas's father was a butcher, and there is a 1903 passenger list record for a Thomas Henderson, butcher aged 24 & last living in Newcastle, which is where 'your' Thomas's family had also been living.  Arrived New York aboard the Cedric on 17 May 1903, sailing from Liverpool.
