Sent to Bermuda. I thought it was to the Hulk China but can't find a reference to it.

Thanks Jim. Does this mean he was sent to China via Bermuda?

'Bermuda per China' - he was transported to Bermuda on the ship China.  If you look back through the pages you will see the names of some more recognisable convict ships which went to Tasmania.

Many thanks Debra. Gradually building up a picture of William after his conviction for what would today be considered a relatively minor offence - stealing a pair of reins! Still trying to make out the gaoler's comments.

Yes Ruskie, I think you're right having studied it again. Many thanks. Wondered what might have happened to William after serving his seven years in Bermuda.

Yes, I also think it is 'crime'.  There are a few of those and some 'lived partly by depredation'.

......his conviction for what would today be considered a relatively minor offence - stealing a pair of reins!

Six brushes and a pair of reins.  It was his third offence so he was pushing his luck.
