Germany: Beanoof, Banback
« on: Tuesday 20 June 17 10:04 BST (UK) »
Looking for a town(?) called Banback. Have multiple spelling variations:
Banback, Banbach, Barback, Barbach, etc.

Specifically
Ludwig Schubert born circa 1832 in Beanoof, Banback, Prussia, Germany. He also married Ernestine Markoe there at the age of 25.

He died in Australia in 1898 which is where this info is from, hence the bad translation (I'm assuming!)

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Hi Tassidevil,

do you have the original document ?
Or do you have any other documents at all, which could limit the search ?

Problems can arise, because, as you say, there are different spelling possibilities,
but also .... "Prussia" is very indeterminate. At different times different parts of Germany were also part of Prussia, but the boundaries were fluid and changed often.

The best search possibility for german place names is the
GOV  Geschichtliche Orts-Verzeichnis
i.e Historical Place register
http://gov.genealogy.net/search/index

Simply enter all your place names (one at a time !) in the "Ortsname" box and then click "Suchen"

"Barbach" (for instance) shows this, complete with map.

Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate) was (at one time) also part of Prussia.

ps off-topic, but...
Katzenelnbogen is a corruption of the yiddish expression
"Kazim Elim Bochen" - (Sole leader of the tribe)
