There is a James McDonald born to John McDonald and Jean Grigor in Inverness in 1816 on SP.  That would make him 22 on marriage in 1838 which would fit nicely.
These parents also had Joseph 1809, William 1810 and Isobel 1813 according to Family Search.
Freecen have a 75 year old boat builder called John McDonald living at Clachnaharry with a 20 year old Jane and a 5 year old Flora Grey in 1841.

Pigot and Co.'s National Commercial Directory of 1837 have a John McDonald and a Sween McDonald both listed under "Boat Builders" with the address Clachnaharry in Inverness.
Pigots 1825-1826 have McDonald Alex, Clachnaharry and McDonald James, Merkinch (just up the road) under "Ship & Boat Builders" in Inverness.

Great finds J11!

That is certainly the correct James MacDonald. The age of that freecen entry maybe seems a bit old to be James's father. It could be, but would be closer to a grandfather's age.
The entry on the 1837 directory appears to be John. I wonder if Sween and John were related.
What are the chances of there being more than one John MacDonald ship carpenter's in Clachnaharry at this time, with its position on the Caledonian Canal?

Thanks,
Alasdair

Not sure if this is the same Sween but possibly related?

MACDONALD SWEEN Occupier
HOUSE NO 14 TANNERS LANE
INVERNESS
1875
VR004200015-

The DC for Sween would give both parent's names with mother's maiden surname (provided the informant knew those details) if he died after 1855.

Have you found him on other census' & what year would he have been born?

Thanks Annie! Great stuff, I'll follow that up.
Also, regarding J11's freecen find of 75 year old John MacDonald in 1841 Clachnaharry... his next door neighbours are James & Ann MacDonald, boat builder.

Edit. That James and Ann are 45 years old. 25 year old James and Ann are a few households along from Sween & family.

Cheers,
Alasdair
