Hello,

I've discovered what the word says.  :)

"At Shuttle, Inverness"

On the 1861 Census Jane Snr's parents James and Ann MacDonald were living on Shuttle Lane in Inverness. This was in an area next to the river known as the Maggot, which was knocked down a long time ago. The street no longer exists.

This has indeed confirmed to me that Jane was born at her grandparents in 1865. Her mother Jane was born in Clachnaharry to a Ship Carpenter named James MacDonald, and his wife Ann MacKay. James MacDonald's father John MacDonald was also a Ship Carpenter.

Lot's of research to be done on these carpenter Clachnaharry MacDonald's now...

Thanks,
Alasdair

Yes, and you were correct about checking the 1861 Census Annie. Thanks!

The marriage certificate put me off chasing that because Alexander's mother was different. What I think happened was, his mother Jane Fraser died earlier that year, and there was a confusion when recording the parents. His grandmother Margaret MacDonald appears to have been recorded as his mother in that one record. Everything else matches up, and that word "Shuttle" was very important in confirming it was the correct family!

Cheers,
Alasdair

If I have managed to attach them, here are a couple of plans which show the location of Shuttle Lane.

This link should show the relationship of what used to be Shuttle Lane and the present day. It appears that the Friars Bridge now covers most of what used to be the Lane....

There is an 1838 marriage on SP for a James Macdonald and an Ann Mackay in Inverness which might fit.

That's fantastic Agnes. Thanks! It's a very useful website that.

Yes J11, thank you, I actually found that marriage this morning. James' parents were John MacDonald, a ship carpenter in Clachnaharry, and Jane Grigor/MacGregor. Curious to see how far I can go back with those MacDonald's.

Cheers,
Alasdair

A zoomable scrollable map from 1868 which shows Shuttle Lane:

Presumably "Shuttle Lane" is the same as (plain) "Shuttle"?  :)

Thanks Ruskie. Their address in 1871 is given as Factory Street, which is just adjacent.

I found a good photo on http://www.ambaile.org.uk/detail/en/11479/1/EN11479-houses-on-green-row.htm
Presume Green Row and Maggot Row are the same, as it doesn't appear on the maps.

I've searched the 'net with every search term thinkable & I'm very surprised there's nothing mentioned about The Maggot especially the fact it was originally an island, no history or photos to be found.

There may be something to be found here;
