Another thought - there must have been Brays left in Cornwall to be told about Lavinia's marriage and get a notice put in the paper. The notice in the Cornish paper was in October 1850, 6 months after the event - about the time it would take for Lavinia to get a letter to her mother or one of her sisters back in Cornwall.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

The GRO has the death registration -

John Bray, age 50, Reg. District Redruth, March Qtr 1838, 09  151

Redruth covers Gwennap.

Could explain John's absence on 1841 Census?

From Cornwall OPC site:- Report of death i n West Briton newspaper describes him as mine agent from Camborne.

From 1837 Camborne fell within the Registration District of Redruth

The marriage notice in the Royal Cornwall Gazette, 25 Oct 1850 (marriage in Adelaide) mentions -
"Joshua Payne, second son of the late George Payne, Esq, of Elm Grove, Peckham .... Lavinia Carter Bray, third daughter of the late Captain John Bray of Camborne Cornwall"

Has anyone found anything about Joshua yet?
We know he was the second son of a George Payne who was deceased by the time of the marriage in April 1850. The Australian papers say george was of Christchurch London, the Cornish paper gives his former address as Elm Grove Peckham. Peckham was in reg district of Camberwell and in ecclesiastical parish of Christchurch - so there my not be such an anomaly with address.
The only death of an adult George between 1837 and 1850 registered in camberwell district is in 1844, this George was 71, seems a bit old unless Joshua was quite a bit older than Lavinia.

The Globe, 10 May 1844
DIED - At Peckham, Mr George Payne, in his 72nd year

Looks a strong candidate for Joshua's father?

Totally speculative from Family Search:- John Bray baptised Gwennap  26 August 1787, son of John and Catherine

The same couple baptised an Ambrose on 28 mar 1785. But there are a lot of Brays in Gwennap, and the name Ambrose crops up several times

Good find on the census - I'd drawn a blank there. I had found the baptisms but couldn't link them. If Joshua was the second son of George, there must be an older brother somewhere.
