I'd flagged up Lavinia, dau of John, miner and Elizabeth, bap Perranzabuloe as a possibility (Cornwall OPC) and in the process of checking out the 1841 Census entry for Lavinia, age 14, mother Elizabeth Bray, inn keeper - but no sign of John.

From Trove Newspapers I see that Ambrose Bray and Miss L C Bray were mentioned in an item entitled "South Australia - List of Unclaimed Letters, Dec 31 1849" (Adelaide Times, 14 Jan 1850).

The mention of an Ambrose Bray provides the link to the 1841 Census and Elizabeth Bray, inn keeper.

The baptism record of John Bray, Gwennap,  26 May 1833, shows his father, John, as a "mine agent". Clearly more than a simple miner.

The marriage notice in the Royal Cornwall Gazette, 25 Oct 1850 (marriage in Adelaide) mentions -
"Joshua Payne, second son of the late George Payne, Esq, of Elm Grove, Peckham .... Lavinia Carter Bray, third daughter of the late Captain John Bray of Camborne Cornwall"

Lavinia was 3rd daughter. The '41 census has an older sister Mary, there's another older sister somewhere.
