Can't find family in 1861 Census
« on: Wednesday 21 June 17 16:23 BST (UK) »
I am researching the Lines family, of Diss, Norfolk.

In 1851 (HO107/1821/327  p7) they are living in Diss; John, Harriet (parents), children Thomas b1843, Dora b1845, John b1847, Charles b1849.

Father John died 1853.

After some chasing, I have found that Dora was Born as Rosetta, and married John Bray in 19 Jun 1870 in Ipswich; The 1871(RG10/1834/63 p 8) census shows them living in Diss. By the 1881 Census(RG11/1869/44 p 2) Harriet Lines is looking after Rosetta's child Ada Harriet Bray b1874 in Ipswich. Rosetta is in Gt Yarmouth in 1881 (RG11/1914/110 p 6)

Thomas, by 1871 (RG10/1834/85 p 23), has m1864 Alice Mary Cracknell, and is living in Diss.

So (at least) Harriet, Thomas, Rosetta were alive in 1861.

I cannot find them in the Census.

Can anyone?

Charles Berley Lines was b1848 (from FreeBMD) the GRO index confirms his mother as Spurdens;
Charles Burley Lines b1848 died in Colchester 1874 (FreeBMD), so very much alive in 1861.

I've found a good set of data for John b1847;

GRO index gives  LINES, JOHN  WILLIAM, MMN Spurdens, b1847  M Quarter in DEPWADE

1861 census (RG 9/1175/41 p 13) has him apprentice to a Grocer & Draper in Orford, in 1871 (RG10/448/23 p 5) he's off to the big smoke, as a Waiter for the "Black Tavern" in Shoreditch.

At least I've found one of them in 1861!

You have probably worked out that 'Dora' is a mistranscription on ancestry for 'Rosa' in 1851.

Hmm, not an easy one this...

Have you seen
RG 9; Piece: 1239; Folio: 4; Page: 1; Woodrising
Charles Oxborough   62
Eliza Hardeaielce   32 [not sure what this actually should be]
Rosa Lane   18 servant b Hingham, Norfolk
George Garver   59
Don't know how near Hingham is to Diss....

Have looked with no success for Thomas 1843, Charles 1849....

There are two mentions of Harriet Lines in the newspapers in 1861 :

Bury & Norwich Post 11 Jun 1861

all estate & effects of Harriet Lines  of Diss , Ironmonger , assigned in trust to John Kent , Gentleman , of Diss and John Esling of  the same place , Grocer , for the equal benefit of creditors ....

and in the same paper 24 Sep 1861 all of her stock of ironmongery is advertised for sale at auction.

It seems she may have fallen on hard times .
