Hi Claire,
Thank you for replying. It certainly looks promising. I just need to see if I can trace John and Jane Taylor back to any links with France.

I have found the St Matthew's marriage for 16th August 1824. St Matthew's is the parish church of Walsall. It was a Tuesday so if the market day was the same as my childhood it was a market day and the church is at the top of the hill where the market is. Wonder if they did that to get transport?

Was this the time when a Roman Catholic marriage wasn't a legal marriage on it's own or is this due to different religions of the people concerned?

Thank you for all of the information.  So I gather at least one of the couple was a Roman Catholic - I wonder wh they got married the following day in an Anglican church?  Maybe you are right in that it was to do with the laws of the time concerning the catholic faith.

Interesting to find out they married on a Tuesday and that it coincides with Market day.

Does anyone know if there would have been a marriage certificate or some document showing the details of James Taylors parents or his address?

I am wondering how he got from Poole to Bloxwich?
You may have guessed I am new to this and I have hit a brick wall in finding any of the Taylor family.

Very interesting entry in Hansard in 1824 about a Bill proposed to amend the laws regarding Roman Catholic marriages and Baptisms.

I could be wrong, but I gather that marriages were not "legal" unless conducted in a Protestant Church, or had something to do with inheritances, so perhaps that is why your couple "married" twice. I think the law was eventually changed in 1829.

This is probably the baptism for Sarah.

Sarah Bentley.
Baptised  25 Oct 1807. Bloxwich, All Saints. Anglican.

Parents, Geoe and Dinah.

So it looks like James was the Catholic.
