Very interesting entry in Hansard in 1824 about a Bill proposed to amend the laws regarding Roman Catholic marriages and Baptisms.

I could be wrong, but I gather that marriages were not "legal" unless conducted in a Protestant Church, or had something to do with inheritances, so perhaps that is why your couple "married" twice. I think the law was eventually changed in 1829.

A bit more research - such an interesting question!

Until around 1837 upper-middle class Catholics often had two ceremonies—one Catholic to satisfy the conscience and one Anglican to satisfy the law for inheritance and legitimacy of children.

To get from Dorset to Bloxwich and why.

The Black Country was a hive of industry in the Industrial Revolution. Skilled workers were required so that's the likely reason he left Dorset.

The how could be by many ways. Walk, a long way but many did. Coach if you had the money. Horseback again money required. If he walked to Bristol he could get to Worcester by boat on the River Severn and then by barge to the heart of the Black Country to find a job. There's canals around Walsall/Bloxwich.

Wow! Thank you all for the information you have provided so far. Really interesting facts about the Catholic faith and why it was sometimes necessary to have two weddings. I can honestly say I have learned something new today. Thank you! :)

I am confused as to why they would marry in a Roman Catholic Church if neither of them Catholic?

Is James Taylor who was christened in 1802 at the Anglican church, the right James Taylor? If so,why would he marry in Catholic church? I am sure his wife Sarah Bentley was of the Anglican faith.

 ???

Thank you Medpat. I have just been looking at the Catholic church registers for St Marys, Walsall and St Thomas the Apostle, Bloxwich.  Apparently in May 1824 there was a James Taylor who received confirmation at St Mary's.   I am wondering if this could be the same person?
In 1825 there is a Sarah Taylor who is confirmed at St Thomas' in Bloxwich.

I think I need to try and see a copy of their marriage records. So I guess I will have to make a visit to the Catholic records office in Birmingham.

Thank you everyone. I am new to this and so every little bit of help is greatly appreciated.
