Martha Bryant.
« on: Thursday 22 June 17 07:05 BST (UK) »
On the 1851 census Martha Bryant is living/staying with her Grandfather Stephen Bryant, can find very little real information on Martha.

Stephen Bryant born 1765 Westerleigh, married to Mary Rapell in 1795.  On ancestry there are trees with Mary's maiden name as Fussell but the marriage I came across says Rapell.

Stephen and Mary had 5 children that I know of:

Sarah b 1798
Hester b 1899
Stephen b 1802
George b 1804
Mary b 1808.

Granddaughter Martha was born in 1826 Tytherington, Gloucestershire.

Any help would be appreciated.

There is only one Martha Bryant on the Gloucestershire Baptisms Index and she was baptised in Tytherington on 31 Nov 1822 as Martha Curl Bryant, daughter of John Bryant, a farmer, and wife Elizabeth.

I cannot find a baptism for a Martha in 1826.

Thank you emeltom.   Looks like Stephen and Mary had another son John Carl.  Will try and find him.  Thank you for your help.

If you look at the Forest of Dean Family History website under Gloucestershire Marriage Allegations and Bonds.

They are two records for

30 November 1795

Stephen BRYANT aged 30 a Farmer of Westerleigh  = c 1765  **

marrying

Mary FUSSELL aged 30 a Spinster of Westerleigh

witness: James NEAL of Chipping Sodbury

---

Ancestry has a Burial at Westerleigh of

Stephen BRYANT - in 1826 aged 68 years =  c1758

---

Stephen BRYANT aged 68 = c1765 on the 1851 census

----

There is also another baptism at Tytherington : 18 January 1820

Mary BRIANT - (another spelling of BRYANT) -
parents: John (occupation, Farmer) and Elizabeth

---
Ancestry

Marriage by Licence at Pucklechurch, 23 March 1819

John BRYANT of Westerleigh and Elizabeth HALL

witnesses: Robert ALWAY and Sarah HALL

? is the middle name CURL possibly HALL

If the middle name isn't Curl but Halll - need to see the original to be certain - then John and Elizabeth Bryant also had a son John Hall Bryant baptised Tytherington in 1821.

??

So far, I can see

John BRYANT on the 1871 census, at Llanelly, Breconshire, born WESTERLEIGH

aged 78, (c1793) Widower, with his Son, Stephen BRYANT aged 45, a Tailor, born Frampton, Gloucestershire

? think Stephen BRYANT is on the 1841 census, Bitton, Glos aged 15, Tailor Apprentice.

Ancestry has just a blocked out print-out :  Frampton Cotterell Gloucestershire - 8 January 1826

Stephen BRYANT - parents: John & Elizabeth

Apart from her appearance with grandfather Stephen in 1851 I am having great difficulty finding Martha on any subsequent Censuses. There is a Martha born 1826 in Mangotsfield with a John and Elizabeth Bryant in 1841 but not sure that is correct. Can't see a marriage or death either.
