Benjamin MASON b1810 Gt Bourton & family
« on: Thursday 22 June 17 09:24 BST (UK) »
I am looking to find/confirm information about Benjamin MASON and
family of the Great Bourton area.

Benjamin was born about 1810 in Great Bourton according to the census
records. The most likely baptism record found is the baptism of
Benjamin Mason on 9 Mar 1808 at Cropredy son of John Mason & Mary. His
death seems to be in 1878 age 69. So the records just about match up,
I haven't found any better alternatives.

He was married to Ann born about 1813 in Wardington. I can't find
matching records with those details. But I've found what seems to be
the marriage, to Mary Ann CARTER on 19 Jul 1831 in Ladbroke, and her
baptism on 21 Jun 1813 in Wardington daughter of John Carter and Ann.
It seems she was baptised Mary Ann and just as preference used Ann
from a later date.

Children of Benjamin and Ann known are John (b.1833 GB), Betsy (b.1841
GB), Mary (b.1843 GB), William (b.1851 GB). Quite big gaps in between
them but I can't find any more recorded children.

Nothing known of Benjamin's parents or siblings, that's the next step
of the research...

Any info/help appreciated :)

There may have been other children who died young.  Have you checked for births and deaths on the GRO index which allows you to cross check with mothers maiden name?

Have you found the family on census?

They may also have had a child Mary Ann Mason baptised 7 Jul 1839 at Cropredy but then buried there 9 Nov 1839.

Benjamin's father John was a blacksmith who died in 1820 and had a poem written on his gravestone at Gt Bourton, which I can quote, if you are still interested.

Benjamin's brothers were-
William - Blacksmith & Agricultural Machine maker (Will Proved 1879)
  Thomas - Blacksmith & Beerseller
Joseph - Smith & Farrier of Deddington (Will Proved 1876)
Richard - Blacksmith & Farmer of Baginton, Warks (Will Proved 1909)

The Deddington link points to John being one of the younger sons of William Mason, Blacksmith of Deddington (Will Proved 1823) & Mary Perry whose family created the Masons of Deddington business which produced world class axles for stagecoaches & carriages.

They are mentioned here:- http://www.deddingtonhistory.uk/historicalcharacters
