Merchant Navy
« on: Thursday 22 June 17 10:27 BST (UK) »
Hi

Not sure if this is the correct forum, but I wonder if anyone could help me.

I have found my gg grandfather's merchant navy record (Christopher Holbin (Holburn) on FindMyPast.

The record shows the names of the ships he was on, i.e. Perseverance 92/2113 in Dec 1842 and Peace 92/1036 in July 1843.

Does anyone know if there is any record of these ships.  I would love to know about them.

Both vessels were registered in Sunderland. Port number 92. The other digits are the ships port rotation number. No key exists to relate PR numbers to an individual ships name. There are 2 vessels named PERSEVERANCE registered in Sunderland in those years.
Both look as though they were involved in the East coast coal trade. Can find no record for PEACE. (Other poster's may have details)
To find out more you need to visit TNA Kew and look at the crew agreements of Sunderland vessels for those years. Search via your ancestors name or PR number.

Be aware that many of these crew agreements have been lost or destroyed

Thanks seaweed for your prompt response.

One question - I assume they would have been wooden ships as he was a Carpenter.  Do you know where I can get an image of the sort of ship they might have been.

Thanks

Yes. They would have been wooden vessels. Type East coast colliers 1800's into google images.
