Mariners in England
« on: Saturday 24 June 17 02:14 BST (UK) »
Hi all - question regarding Royal Navy vs Merchant Mariner. My 4x gr grandfather indicated "mariner" on the 1841 England census. I don't know his exact dob, but have a possible Royal Navy record from 1831 that could be him. Would "mariner" imply merchant mariner? Would one have gone from navy to the merchant shipping business? Thanks for your help :)

Who was he, when was he born/married/died?

I think it would mention on his marriage if he was in the Navy?

Have you found him on any other census'?

What was his occ. on his children's births?

Hi Annie, his occ is not mentioned on any of his kid's bc's. No other censuses as I think he died in 1842. No occupation on his mc. This is for Alexander Rowe. The '41 census says he was 30 but could have been 30-34 as they rounded down. Married in 1838.

He was not around when his kids got married sadly. He married in 1838 and from what I can see, he died in 1842. I think...I know his wife remarried in 1848. I found a record of a ship explosion in 1842, captained by Alexander Rowe. I just don't know for sure if that was him. The only thing I know for sure is that he was a mariner in 1841.

He wouldn't have to be around as the info. on a marriage would be e.g. Father's name & occupation (deceased) if he was deceased otherwise if he was alive it would be ditto without 'Deceased'

There are records for an Alexander Rowe born circa 1809-1810 in Marazion, Cornwall:

- serving in the Royal Navy in 1831 as an AB on the Opossum from Falmouth to Halifax NS
- in the merchant navy in 1835 as mate on Elizabeth of Falmouth in April 1836
