Lost in 1881
« on: Saturday 24 June 17 15:36 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the Morris family on the 1881 Census with no luck and would be so grateful for any help.

James Patrick Morris (known as Patrick) born 1849 County Down Ireland
Ellen Morris born 1850 Ireland
Their children
Bridget born 19/1/1875 Longton, Staffordshire
Mary Ann born 6/5/1877 Sharleston, Wakefield
Ellen born 1882 Longton

James Patrick & Ellen married 20/2/1871 Longton and on the 1871 Census lived at Cross Street, Longton
Ellen died 1883 Stoke on Trent.
I have been unable to find the families of James Patrick & Ellen, on the marriage certificate his father was Patrick Morris labourer and her father was Martin Peyton labourer.

Quite possible avm but I don't know what they were doing in Pontefract  ???
I have just checked again the children's births on GRO and (Mum) Ellen's surname isn't consistent
on Bridget's it states Payden
Mary Ann's Paton
I can't seem to find Ellen's as the only one in Staffordshire is Mother's surname Shaw
There was another child Margaret born 1883 mother's surname Paton but she died within a few days and Mum Ellen a week later.
On the marriage certificate, surname for Ellen was Peyton, but with Irish accents and not able to read & write who knows if that is right :-\

Not sure that can be reconciled with the Jun qtr 1883 birth of Margaret Morris mmn Paton in Stoke on Trent (and maternal death same district, same quarter).

I have just dug out the Birth Certificate of Daughter Mary Ann born 1877 and she was born at 16 Long Row, Sharlston, Wakefield, but it states her mother Ellen the informant lives at 29 West Riding Terrace, Normanton. It would make sense for Ellen (daughter) to have been born & registered in Pontefract as that is nearer the area Mary Ann was born but the DOB's aren't the same. It looks as if I will have to buy more Birth Certificates to sort this one out.

Thank you both for your help. I am going to send for the Birth Certificate in Pontefract you found avm228, as I can't find a close match in Longton, Staffs where it states she was born on the Census.

Is that from the 1891 census? I haven't found that - could you point us to it?
