Hello J11,

I have found his wife and children in Holm Street, Barony, Glasgow in the 1841 census.

Thank you,
Jean

If he isn't listed with them in 1841 then unfortunately it is likely he was away at sea on the night of the census given his occupation. This means he won't be listed if this is the case.

Presumably he was a Clyde pilot.  There are pilotage records at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow:

Liviani and ShaunJ,

Thank you so much for giving me the answers I have been waiting to hear.
I now know that I won't find him on a census, and I now know of the existence of Clyde pilots.
An email will be sent to the Mitchell library later today.
I am so pleased that I now have a positive direction.
