Marriages 1840s Greives/Ward (Norfolk/Cambs)
« on: Sunday 25 June 17 15:18 BST (UK) »
I have found a marriage reference for John Greaves and Theodora Ward March Qtr 1840 Wisbeach(freeBMD), but cannot trace any marriage in churches in that area.

Was it a requirement that all marriages took place in church around that time or could there just be a civil ceremony? Their first two children were baptised at Clenchwarton in 1840 and 1842.

There's nothing wrong with being mediocre...as long as you're good at it!

Immediately before 1837 the only legal places to marry were the Church of England and the places of worship of Jews and Quakers, but the legislation that introduced civil registration in 1837 also made it a possibility in other non-conformist churches, and brought in civil ceremonies in a register office.

To begin with not many non-conformist churches had their own registers, so the registrar had to attend; on sites like YorkshireBMD (the one I'm most familiar with) these marriages are listed as taking place in a "Registered Building (registrar attended)", or words to that effect. This means that access to the registers is more or less the same as if it had been a civil ceremony.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
