William Meechan 1901 Census

For William Meechan is states Feeble-minded. This has an 'X' though it. Does that mean I should discount it? What exactly do they mean by describing him as feeble-minded? Thank you.
Ireland: Mayo - O'Malley, Malley, Currigan, Lynchacan. Antrim - McAuley. Louth - Byrne. Down - Smith.

England: Lancashire - O'Malley, McCauley, Foster.

Not 100% mentally.  If you Google it you get

        (of a person) having less than average intelligence.

Does that entry appear against earlier entries?  If not - it could indicate he was developing dementia or similar by 1901.  He is still shown as having an occupation though.

Hi CaroleW, So far I'm not able to find him or his wife on any other records.

I notice that Joseph was born in England 1889 so have you checked the English 1891 census

Big gap in ages between William & Joseph - was Edna a second wife perhaps?

The 'X' through the word is maybe just a means of the enumerator checking off that they have accounted for this entry in their statistics.
