John Bosher (b.1858) Missing
« on: Monday 26 June 17 04:46 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,
I am looking at the family of Thomas Bosher (1836-1921). He was born in Egham, Surrey, the son of John Bosher.
Thomas and his family arrived in Wellington, in 1876, aboard the Waipa. They lived in Buckle Street.
Their arrival and lives have been recorded on several trees and by at least one family historian, Shirley Ritchie. All name only five children; however as I re-read the Waipa passenger list, I (possibly) discovered #6.
The list is: Thomas (39), wife Harriett (43), Thomas (19), *John (17), George (15), Emily (11), Harriet (eight) , Catherine (6). All born in Surrey.

John Bosher (my #6) only appears on the passenger list.  His name and birth date is consistent with naming tradition and sibling birth dates. However, he is unrecorded with the Boshers in the 1861 & 1871 UK censuses; I struggle to find a reliable birth record and there is no record of his marriage or death in New Zealand BDM.

Any assistance is appreciated in advance, Cheers. :)

The child born between Thomas and George was named William, but he died as an infant.  The immigration record does not give relationships so he might be a nephew to Thomas?

Hi Debra,  I found William, but not his death. A bit perplexing.  John Bosher is the name of Thomas' father so there is some logic in there being a son called John.
Debra, I have considered the nephew scenario,  possible, but where did he come from and go to? Thanks for the input. ;) :)

Hi thanks for looking,
Thomas Bosher senior was my gt.gt. grandfather. At the moment, at the behest of a close relation, I am collecting a mass of research notes and trying to form a written family history.
The previous unexplored fact that John Bosher was aboard the Waipa seems to be more than coincidence.
The account of the voyage that you have kindly attached, confirms that there were no deaths during the journey. Therefore,  a John Bosher landed in NZ....and disappeared ???.

Cheers :)

Hi Nzenigma,

Have you searched variants of the name BOSHER? I wonder if John might have died in New Zealand and was buried in a local cemetery, probably under his correct name but the death registered under a different spelling (drawing a very long bow, I admit).

Another option is that he perhaps headed over the ditch to AUS.
