Marriage James and Helen Greenhough c 1863
« on: Monday 26 June 17 18:37 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am looking for the Helen Rowney Greenhough's maiden name - born c1845 in London. Husband James Greenhough born 1839 Manchester.  1871 census they are living in Holly Brook Cottage, Barton-upon-Irwell.  I can't find a marriage for them, I think her maiden name could be Laxton.  Would appreciate any help.

Regards

A son called Harry Augustus Greenhough born 1863 birth record shows mother's maiden name Patterson.

On the 1881 'Helen' is recorded as Nellie  ???

nellie is quite a common nickname or shortened version of Helen/Ellen/Eleanor and even Lillian. Just like Maggie or Peggy for Margaret for example. Quite how that came from Caroline, I don't know.

Hi, thanks to both of you for your help - Harry Augustus was the person I was actually researching!!  I have seen his mother referred to as Nellie, so that is understandable.  Helen / Caroline is quiet far removed from one another.  Could you tell me who else is in the household in 1881? I can't seem to find them on Findmypast

Thanks so much for your time and help

Thanks for the census - James and family immigrate to New Zealand and on the youngest daughters birth her name is Helen as well as her death in New Zealand in 1920 her names are Helen Rowney Greenhough.  Could she have changed her name? I've even tried writing "Nellie" to see if it could be interpretted as Helen - possible but 3 times??

'Nellie' is a common name used by Helen/Ellen's and variants thereof.   My own grandmother was Ellen but always known as Nellie.
