Mmmm ... I don't think I read your query terribly well, did I ?   ::)

And so the Thomas CHALLINOR at my reply # 6 (from Brisbane to UK in 1926) probably isn't the right man.    :D

I wouldn't write him off too soon, Lu - the Thomas you found is the right age, and in the right sort of trade (he's an Iron Worker on his attestation in 1909). He is an elusive gentleman.

Thanks to all of you. I've got some of that info, including Thomas's military stuff from England. But it never occurred to me to look for his father and brother in the NZ records. And the thought that he might have worked his way home on a ship is brilliant -- I know he was broke. Great response.

There is a tree on Ancestry, which looks well researched, with Thomas's details.

https://www.ancestry.com.au/family-tree/person/tree/62842010/person/30216122000/facts

Unfortunately, on further checking, this tree has different people on the 1901 and 1911 censuses. The 1911 record is a different family.

The wife (Sarah) and other children (Eva, Ernest, Dora and Wilfred) of Thomas CHALLINOR (snr) who came to New Zealand, are living at 24 Crewe Street, Chester in 1911.

Lu - if you look at the older Thomas in the tree I linked to, there is also a return trip, with passenger list, in 1930.
