SAMPSON, Catharine - born circa 1760 (possibly St Erme?)
« on: Tuesday 27 June 17 03:46 BST (UK) »
Hello.  This post is related to my previous query here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=772357.0

My 4x great-grandmother Catherine Pill was baptised as Kitty in Newlyn East in 1797, parents Anthony and Catharine Pill.

Other baptisms for Anthony and Catharine Pill in Newlyn East are: Mary (1793), John (1795), Jennifer (1800) and Elizabeth (1807).

Anthony Pill marries Catharine Sampson in Newlyn East on 8 April 1791.  On the Banns and on the marriage record Catharine is shown as a sojourner residing in St Erme.  Witnesses are Richard Henwood and John Williams.

I have not found a death for Anthony Pill.

On the 1841 census Catherine Pill age 80, born in County, is in Newlyn East at Trevilson with daughter Elizabeth age 35.

Catherine Pill dies Newlyn East in 1844, parish record transcript shows age as 84, GRO shows age as 80.

I have not been able to find a baptism or any other details for Catharine Sampson.  Any assistance gratefully received.

possible burial for Anthony with surname transcribed as Pile aged 60  7 Dec 1817 in Newlyn East abode noted as Trevilson - same as Pill family in 1841.

Have you checked baptisms for Christian as well? I have more than one Christian/Catherine shortened to Kitty in my family in Cornwall at that time.

Thank you - he should only be 55 but that looks like a credible suspect.

I didn't know Christian and Catharine were interchangeable.

Katherin Samson bp 17 Sep 1765 dau of Richard & Mary in St Agnes

I had the opportunity to pick up this research over Easter and my feeling is that Katherin Samson is a credible candidate for Catharine Sampson.

Her parents appear to be Richard Sampson and Mary Thomas who married in St Agnes on 25 April 1761.  Although the Vicar spelled the surname "Samson" at the top of the entry, Richard has clearly signed his own name as "Sampson."

Peter Samson son of Richard and Mary was baptised in St Agnes in October 1761.

Peter Sampson son of Richard was buried in St Agnes in November 1769.

Richard Sampson was buried in St Agnes in April 1770.

Mary Sampson, Widow, was buried in St Agnes in May 1770.

The first child of Anthony Pill and Catharine Sampson was Mary Pill.

Even if Katherin Samson and Catharine Sampson are one and the same, Mary Thomas is a very popular name so I doubt I will be able to take this any further.
