WWI or WWII? DCLI or Irish...
« on: Tuesday 27 June 17 10:08 BST (UK) »
Found this in the loft, if I know which war...might have half a chance of determining who it is!

May be DCLI, or could well be irish...I have no idea!

Thanks in advance.

David

The buttons are the General Service buttons worn by the majority of regiments until about 1928 so they don't help BUT his shoulder title could be the bugle above the word Cornwall of the DCLI. Other eyes may see it better than I.

What I am suggesting (tentatively) is that the shoulder title is this one.

It's the right shape, isn't it? Are there many more shoulder titles of a similar shape?

There are indeed and many that have some sort of emblem above the regimental title.  However, my reading of david's initial post suggested to me that he had other info that the man was either DCLI or an Irish regiment and this resembles more closely the DCLI than any Irish regiment I've seen.  I can't find an Irish regiment title that has anything as large as what I identify as the bugle above the word. But who knows whether I've seen them all (google images "shoulder titles WW1")

Hi Max,

The reason for irish of DCLI is that my relatives were in both. I have an assumption that its my great grandfather, but there are no known photos of him! He was in the DCLI. from 1908-to early 1930's. So if we assume its the DCLI, its the only relative (from that side of the family) in the DCLI so we can deduce its him!

Which is a bonus.

Thank you!
David
