Where is this place and is it still there?
« on: Tuesday 27 June 17 14:33 BST (UK) »
On her wedding certificate (1940)  my mother's address is given as 1 St. Mary's Cottages, off Upper Dorset Street, Dublin.  I'd be very grateful if anyone can enlighten me about that area, whether it was residential or commercial, etc. Anything at all would be useful. I'm trying to establish whether she was a maid in service with a family at that time or if this was an address of a friend. Is the address still extant or no longer in existence?
Many thanks.

Thanks for replying.
Don't know the name of the house owner (or the owner of set of cottages) - might be Stone or Sweeny. My mother's maiden name was Nevin and I know she was a domestic but whether it was at this address or some other is what I'm trying to find out. Are there any pictures of old Dublin which might show this area?

A few sites seem to indicate St.Mary's Cottages were in what is now Paradise Place (just off Upper Dorset St). If that is correct, you can see it on google maps, although the site seems to be under redevelopment. Also on google is a picture of a shrine apparently there.

This is the Church in middle of street on above map, so it is down sidestreet to your right, all demolished

Thanks to you all so very much. I'm also appealing to the Dublin Forum for any old photos that might show up the area or aspects thereof.
My father's mother was a Corrigan from Ranelagh, her father a grocer, so I'd like to know Dublin a bit better!
Thanks again.
